Its just shampoo right?

Updated: Mar 16

When you get into creating skincare you become aware of ingredients, you understand what makes an ingredient effective, what makes it beneficial to your skin and what makes it good for the environment.

When you add in a very sensitive scalp you have a recipe for alot of head scratching (pun slightly intended)!

Our new shampoo & conditioner took alot of time and stress to create but it was worth the effort

.

A shampoo starts with a blend of surfactants, these are the agents that are responsible for removing dirt and excess oils from your hair and scalp. These fall into 3 types and they dont like each other very much. As a general rule the better a surfactant works the scarier the chemical is for your skin and the environment. There are of course exceptions to this rule but finding them has taken time and patience. The surfactants that we have landed on are naturally derived from coconut and are great at cleaning, gentle and good for the environment (the holy trinity for shampoo). These are COSMOS, ECOCERT & my scalp approved and that is by no means an easy thing to achieve. These surfactants do a wonderful job of cleaning without going too far and damaging skin or hair.

Once you have chosen your surfactants you need something to suspend them in. This is where you really start to see the extra details and complexity in our shampoo. This is not complexity for the sake of it (or to justify an inflated price) but because it genuinely adds to the overall function of the shampoo.

Rather than using plain old water we use an in house blended and created hydrosol. For the uninitiated a hydrosol is an extraction of the essential oils and the 'goodness' of an ingredient into water enhancing the product overall. The full recipe for our shampoo hydrosol will remain a secret but it certainly contains Saponaria (fans or our honey wash rejoice) & heather honey with infused wild heather. This magical wildflower is here on our doorstep & certainly something that should be appreciated. This beautiful & unassuming flower packs an absolute punch. as well as a number of other native and highly beneficial plants. Our Hydrosol is produced in a traditional copper still, not because its nostalgic of looks nice but because it remains the best way to do the job.

We combine this with local wildflower hydrosol, organic batana & black bee heather honey. Its so effective because we use traditional methods in house using copper stills to create a floral hydrosol, this process is quite lengthy however the results pay off because this method gives you a natural foaming agent that allows your skin to feel soothed, hydrated & nourished. Our native honey is infused with additional wild heather flowers to give the scalp relief.

Now we have a good solid base we can discuss the other highlights. Batana oil & honey combined strengthen hair from root to tip, moisturises & softens and promotes elasticity of hair which can help prevent breakage. Packed with fatty acids, antioxidants, anti- fungal & antibacterial properties this shampoo will prevent itching, flaking and soreness to the scalp.

We have wild Heather on our doorstep as far as the eye can see in the Tweed Valley. The heather flower has powerful anti-inflammatory properties & conditioning benefits. How you may ask? Heather contains nourishing compounds, including flavanols (Flavonoids possess a number of medicinal benefits, including anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties). Heather also contains catechins (Free radicals are unstable molecules that are made during normal cell metabolism). Phenolic acids (natural antioxidants). Phenols and triterpenes (anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal), all of which can give skin conditioning properties.!

Directions of use- wash hair twice if hair has been left unwashed for more than four days. Lather at the root & wash thoroughly starting from root to tip. For maximum shiny, soft & nourished hair use our bee conditioning range- enjoy
